Help for Heroes Fundraising Day at St Francis
On Friday 11th May, pupils at St Francis Catholic Primary School in Milford Haven held a non-uniform day and cake sale to raise funds for the Help for Heroes charity. The pupils in Years 5 and 6 at the school were inspired to organise the event following a recent competition entry held by the Welsh Books Council. This involved composing, staging and performing a short drama based upon a book by a Welsh author. This year, the material selected by the pupils told the story of Hedd Wyn, a Welsh poet and soldier who was posthumously awarded the Bardic Chair at the 1917 Eisteddfod following the events of World War One.
The pupils performed their drama during the weekly Friday celebration assembly to teachers and younger pupils but also extended the invitation to parents, families and teaching professionals to join them after the performance for a coffee morning. Also joining them on the morning were WO2 Sam Lingwood, LCpl Nick Cawley and LCpl Dean Masters. The soldiers from Castlemartin continue to support reading activities in the school. St Francis raised over £200 on the day and is still receiving donations. Staff and pupils at St Francis would like to express their gratitude to all who supported the event and for the generous donations of cash and baked goods.
