Welsh Life at St. Francis
Bywyd Cymreig yn Ysgol Sant Ffransis
Welsh has become a natural part of everyday life in our school.
Through fun activities including language games the expectations are high and the children have risen to the challenge whilst having fun. The pupils in our school are very conscious of the benefits of being able to speak Welsh. Attainment at the end of Key Stage Two is high and in the Summer Term of 2015 a quarter of Year 6 pupils left our school to go to secondary school having acheived level 6 which is significantly higher than expected.
We have a Welsh Council 'Y Cyngor Cymraeg', they are totally in charge of the weekly Welsh assembly and present the Welsh speaker certificates every week. They prepare a termly newsletter giving information to parents on what the Welsh Council has accomplished. The 'Y Cyngor Gymraeg' have also welcomed parents in for Welsh learning sessions and they ensure that everyone has the chance to speak Welsh daily. The pupils are enthusiastic about the Welsh language and they have been to the Urdd Camp in Llangrannog and the Urdd centre in Cardiff for residentiatl trips to have the opportunity to speak Welsh with children from other schools. The members of the Welsh Council are also eager to help the younger children in the school; they read books with them to help them with pronouncing words.
In 2015 and 2016 St Francis Catholic School won a 'Shwmae' award as recognition of the hard work and commitment to raising the profile of Welsh in our school. Please see the video at the top of this page to see our 2017 entry. In January 2016, we were asked to pilot a Welsh language charter for ERW consortium. Since then the school have been awarded the bronze and silver award and in July 2018 we were the first in Wales to achieve the gold award!
The children in St. Francis School are proud of their Welsh, enthusiastic and successful.
The pupils love to use the iPads in their Welsh sessions; why not use some of the apps at home to help your child practise the skills they have learned in class? Click on the link below to see the apps available.
